Soldiers Grove teenager dies in two-vehicle crash Sunday
Vernon County Sheriff's Office says two others seriously injured
KICKAPOO, Wis. (WKBT) — A Soldiers Grove teenager is dead after a two-vehicle crash in the Town of Kickapoo early Sunday morning.
According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s office 19-year-old Preston Nelson, of rural Soldier’s Grove, lost control of his vehicle on US Highway 14 around 1:20 a.m.
Sheriff John Spears said Nelson’s vehicle crossed the center line, hit another vehicle and rolled multiple times into a ditch. Spears said Preston was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nelson had three other passengers in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Eighteen-year-old Steven Young, of rural Chaseburg, was extricated from the vehicle and transported by Med Link Air to Gundersen Health System with serious injuries. Nineteen-year-old Taylor VanVoorhis, of La Crosse, was transported by Tri-State Ambulance to Gundersen with serious injuries. Eighteen-year-old Jacob Kent, of Nekoosa, was transported to Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua with non-life threatening injuries and has since been released.
Spears said none of the occupants in Nelson’s vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The second vehicle was being driven by 17-year-old Dalton Mikkelson, of rural Viroqua. Mikkelson had two other occupants in the vehicle, 18-year-old Levin LeMere of rural Viroqua and 19-year-old Evin Engen of rural Viroqua. Spears said no one was injured in Mikkelson’s truck.
Spears said the crash remains under investigation. The crash marks the second traffic fatality in Vernon County this year.
