Six members of La Crosse Fire Department deployed to Florida to help relief efforts
Seventh sent as troop of National Guard
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — La Crosse’s Fire Department is sending help to Florida.
Six members of the fire department were deployed to areas impacted by Hurricane Irma Sunday. They are a part of the Wisconsin Task Force One Urban Search and Rescue Team.
The team is heading for Jacksonville to help emergency responders in the area, but those plans could change as the storm heads north.
La Crosse’s Fire Chief says this is a good chance for local emergency responders to put their training into practice and help people.
“So it’s a great opportunity for that experience down in another state. Certainly flooding is a high risk issue for us up here, so there’ll be lessons learned and experience to be gained down there that’ll benefit the citizens of La Crosse and the surrounding area as well,” said La Crosse Fire Department Chief Ken Gilliam.
A seventh member of the La Crosse Fire Department is also deploying to Florida as a troop of the Wisconsin National Guard.
