Shovel safety reminders as snow moves into La Crosse area
Shoveling can add stress to heart, back
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The snow means you might shovel snow from your driveway or sidewalks.
And while the work can provide good exercise, it could bring risks of heart attacks or other problems.
“If you are for example, you know, shoveling wet snow. The amount of the snow. How long you do it, you know? You are doing these in probably like when the weather is, it’s also cold. So those things will tend to stress the heart,” said Mayo Clinic Cardiac Electrophysiologist Dr. Freddy Del-Carpio
Some reminders to keep you safe while shoveling:
Talk with your health care provider before shoveling if you have heart problems or are inactive.
Don’t shovel while smoking, eating or after drinking caffeinated beverages.
It can place extra stress on your heart.
And it’s not just your heart you need to look out for.
Stretch your arms and legs before you start.
You are less likely to injure muscles when your muscles are warm.
And protect your back by bending at the knees.
