“Shopping With A Hero”: Kids shop with local officers and emergency responders

The Sparta Police Department spread the holiday cheer to area kids on Tuesday.

Officers, along with EMS, military members and firefighters spent the evening roaming Walmart with local kids, looking for that special holiday gift.

It’s part of the Sparta Police Department’s “Shopping With A Hero” event.

In September, the Department asked the community to send nominations for kids that they felt deserved a little extra holiday cheer.

Those who were picked were given a $50 Walmart gift card and got to spend the evening shopping next to a local hero of their choice.

“It’s just really fun to watch the kids get really excited to run around, have some cookies, and pick out whatever they want for their families,” said Ellen Fink, a Paramedic for Sparta Ambulance, and a return volunteer to the annual event.

After the kids picked out their gifts, the departments spent the rest of the evening wrapping them up.
