Seniors carry G-E-T to state tournament

Senior class provides 7 of top 9 Red Hawks scorers

Ever since freshman season Nick Wagner and Lucas Scherr were starters on the G-E-T boys basketball team. They won Coulee Conference championships and a regional playoff title. But they never accomplished their ultimate goal of advancing to state.

That changed Saturday when G-E-T defeated Prescott 73-60 for a sectional championship and a spot in this season’s state tournament field in Madison.

“Its been a big goal. A lot of fun doing it with this group of guys, we’ve been  playing together since third grade so to get to go play on a big stage in Madison it’s a lot of fun,” said Red Hawks senior Nick Wagner.

“Me and Nick have been playing since our freshman year which we’ve learned a lot  from the last seniors when we were freshman,” said G-E-T senior Lucas Scherr, talking about a group that played at state in 2012. “We’ve learned a lot from them when they were here.”

Over the years their fellow classmates increased their contributions to the Red Hawks program. Noah Hammond played big minutes as a sophomore. Now as seniors, the class provides seven of the team’s top nine scorers on an undefeated G-E-T team heading back to state.

“We were once a team of Nick Wagner and Lucas Scherr in this group in really leading and doing everything,” said head coach Mark Wagner. “And now they can be second fiddle a lot of nights and we’re still good. Noah Hammond has stepped up, and Alex Sill, and TR Norris and we’ve just had a number of seniors that have really elevated there game and that’s really made us a special team this year.”

G-E-T (25-0) takes on Xavier (23-3) in the WIAA Division 3 state semifinal game Thursday at 3:15 p.m. at the Kohl Center in Madison.
