Sen. Baldwin seeking update to federal program helping insure farmers against price changes

A federal insurance program used by many Wisconsin family farms may get an update.

Democratic US Senator Tammy Baldwin sent a letter to party leaders, urging them to reform an insurance program that protects farmers from bad prices.

The original ‘Dairy Margin Protection Program’ passed in 2014. It looks at the difference between milk and feed prices… and will pay farmers if feed costs become too much.

Baldwin says the program has not been updated since being introduced and has not accounted for recent struggles.

“Our dairy farmers really need a good risk management tools so that they can ride through these times of price fluctuations,” said Senator Baldwin.

Senator Baldwin wants to reform the ‘Dairy Margin Protection Program’ before this year’s Agriculture Appropriations Bill is signed.
