Semi trailer fire closes part of I-90 near Sparta overnight
SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) — A semi trailer fire overnight closed the westbound lane of I-90 near Sparta for seven hours.
According to the Sparta Area Fire District, a fire call was received at 10:53 p.m. Tuesday, for a semi trailer fire on I-90 near mile marker 34.
The trailer was fully engulfed when crews arrived. The tractor was disconnected from the trailer and the fire spread to the grass on the shoulder which was quickly extinguished with the command truck.
The trailer was carrying 40,000 pounds of corn starch from Illinois to Hager City, Wisconsin. The trailer and it’s contents were a total loss.
The driver of the semi, Andrzej Leszek, was not injured.
According to Fire Chief Mike Arnold, the cause of the fire is a probable brake malfunction on the trailer.
Assisting the Sparta Area Fire crews were the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, Monroe County Highway Department, Per Towing, Brian Anderson Excavating, and Modern Disposal Service.
