Santa Claus teaches area kids about fire safety

After Sunday’s snowfall, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas and a group of area firefighters are using the holidays to teach about fire safety.

For the past nine years, the Campbell Fire Department has organized a “Santa Run” to educate kids and their families.

Throughout the day, Santa Claus was pulled in his sleigh behind a fire truck as firefighters stopped at eight locations to connect with kids.

Organizers say besides teaching kids about fire safety, the event also gives kids to interact with firefighters.

“The other message we want them to really bring out is we are fire fighters and they need to come to us and feel safe. So if we have to go to their house for an emergency, we want them to come to us and not run away from us,” said Jeff Nylander, fire and safety coordinator for the Campbell Fire Department.

Kids who visited with Santa got a bag of candy and a coloring book containing fire safety tips.
