LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Community member recognizing the decreasing impact of a well-known virus.

Thursday is World Polio Day.

Members of local Rotary Clubs came together to mark the organizations efforts to eliminate the disease.

The polio virus is now found only in Pakistan and Afghanistan, with only one active case each.

“Many people remember what a debilitating disease it was. Also called infantile paralyses, children crippled for life,” said Rotary member Patricia Boge.

The U.S. has been polio free since 1979.

Rotary International is collecting donations to support the continuing immunization effort.
