Richland Center police chief being investigated by Division of Criminal Investigation, sheriff says
RICHLAND CENTER, Wis. — The chief of police in Richland Center is currently under investigation by the state, according to the Richland County sheriff.
Sheriff Jim Bindl confirmed the Division of Criminal Investigation is leading an investigation into police Chief Lucas Clements, though he could not confirm the nature of the investigation. DCI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A member of the city police commission confirmed to News 8’s sister station in Madison, WISC-TV, that Clements is on administrative leave, but no one with the department, city or sheriff’s department had any knowledge of Clements being put on leave.
Clements has served with the department since 2003, according to the city website. Richland Center Mayor Mike Kaufman said he had no knowledge of the investigation, but he said any determination on Clements being put on leave would have to come from the city police commission, per state statute.
The police commission is made up of five private citizens who are appointed by the mayor and common council.
Clements did not answer his door when tried to reach for comment.
