Report: UW Athletic Director Barry Alvarez to coach at Outback Bowl
Badgers head football coach Gary Anderson to leave for Oregon State
MADISON, Wis. — University of Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez will coach the football team for the Outback Bowl, according to an ESPN analyst.
Kirk Herbstreit reported the decision Thursday morning.
The announcement comes the day after head coach Gary Andersen said he will be leaving Wisconsin and taking the head coaching job at Oregon State University.
Alvarez said he will immediately start a national search for a new head football coach. He had hoped to have a replacement by the 17th-ranked Badgers’ bowl game Jan. 1. Alvarez said that the Wisconsin seniors asked him to coach in the Outback Bowl against Auburn.
Andersen was the head coach at Wisconsin for two years, and ended with a record of 19-7 overall and 13-3 in the Big Ten Conference.
Alvarez said he thought Andersen had done a good job. He said Andersen related well to the players and led the Badgers to 10 wins this season, calling the Ohio State loss “one game.”
Alvarez also returned to coach the team in the Rose Bowl after the departure of Bret Bielema in 2012. The team lost to Stanford 20-14.
