Report: Tourism spending up in Wisconsin

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Tourists are spending more money in Wisconsin.

A new report shows spending was up almost two percent statewide last year. In La Crosse county, it’s up almost
4.5%.

The increase is supporting jobs in the state, about 5,500 statewide.

The La Crosse Area Convention and Visitors Bureau says the economy has a lot to do with it.

“I think there’s a little more optimism in people’s minds as far as the economy right now,” says visitors bureau
Executive Director Dave Clements. “Unemployment is high, but it’s starting to creep down. I think all of those things
factor in to people’s decisions to travel.”

Despite increased spending, Clements says he is worried that high gas prices might affect tourism this summer.
