Replacement plans for Highway 16 bridge in La Crosse displayed to public

A major bridge connecting La Crosse with the Valley View Shopping area will see some big changes.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation hosted a public meeting Thursday night to talk about replacing the Highway 16 Bridge between County Road B and Highway 157. There are actually two bridges in the area, but the DOT is only considering replacing the one carrying traffic towards the mall area at this time.

Thursday night was the public’s first chance to get a look at 4 proposed plans to replace the 82-year-old structure.

“The bridge has gotten its life out of it. We got our money out of it. But the increasing maintenance costs just don’t make it cost-effective anymore to continue to dump money into that bridge. It’s time to replace it,” said Wisconsin DOT Project Manager Tom Kratt.

Construction would begin in 2023 at the earliest.

The DOT project was initially going to include reconstructing the stretch of Highway 16 from 157 to Gillette Street but has since downscaled to focus on the bridge and immediate area.
