Remdesivir approved as COVID-19 treatment by FDA
Remdesivir is the first drug to win full FDA approval
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The first drug to treat COVID-19, Remdesivir, is now approved by the FDA.
It is an antiviral medicine given to hospitalized patients through an IV
The drug cut the time to recovery from 15 days to 10 on average.
That’s according to a large study led by the National Institutes of Health.
It had been authorized for use on an emergency basis since spring and now becomes the first drug to win full Food and Drug Administration approval for treating COVID-19.
Doctors with Mayo Clinic say while helpful this will only help certain COVID patients.
“It’s something that is still far from being able to reliably eliminate the disease and it’s really only limited who are already quite ill,” said Mayo Clinic infectious disease physician Dr. John O’Horo.
President Donald Trump received Remdesivir when he tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this month.
