Quick thinking by La Crosse police officer saves man from Mississippi River

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Thanks to some quick thinking by a La Crosse police officer, a man struggling in the Mississippi River was saved off of Pettibone Beach on Wednesday evening.

Just after 7 pm, a man swam off of Pettibone Beach and was overcome by the wake and tow of a barge nearby.

According to La Crosse Police, as the man struggled to stay afloat and screamed for help, Officer Colin Sherden was able to throw him a life vest from on top of the Cass Street Bridge.

That allowed him to get over to one of the bridge supports and hold on until La Crosse Firefighters could get a boat in the water and pull him out.

At this time the man’s name is not being released, but he was brought to safety.
