Proposed changes to Barron Island move to city council

Development could add 7 to 9 million dollars in tax value

A new development on Barron Island in La Crosse has a green light from a city committee.

Barron Island is the site of the former Holiday Inn on the pike, between La Crosse and La Crescent, across from Pettibone Park. Developers from Water Place One are proposing to turn the property into a residential area with 26 homes.

A city committee gave the project the go ahead, meaning the proposal will now make its way to the city council for a final decision. If the plans pass the city council, construction could begin as early as this fall.

The area has been vacant for 15 years and developers say it’s time to change that.

“As everyone has said, this is a gateway development, it’s coming right into the city as you come in from Minnesota, it’s one of the main entry points to the downtown. It’ll be nice not to see a pile of sand and weeds there in the future,” said Water Place One Representative Phil Addis.

According to Water Place One, the proposed development could increase the tax value of the area by $7 to $9 million.
