Project raises awareness about diversity in La Crosse
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — On Saturday morning area residents came together for a difficult conversation…about the challenges of making a more racially and ethnically diverse community.
The public interactive presentation was brought to the English Lutheran Church by ‘Creating a Healthier Multicultural Community.’
It’s a project that helps raise awareness about the realities of people from a wide range of racial…cultural…and ethnic backgrounds face in a predominantly white area.
Two keynote speakers talked about racial disparities and the impact it has in the La Crosse region.
According the U-S Census… about 90-percent of La Crosse is white…which one organizer says makes it difficult for people of color to feel represented.
“In La Crosse, often times those people end up leaving, or they end up leaving companies because the culture isn’t one that allows them to feel represented, to feel seen, so it’s in all of our interests that we figure out ways to be more inclusive, to be more welcoming,” said Pat Lunney, co-leader of Creating A Healthier Multicultural Community.
Organizers are encouraging the community to continue these conversations to create a community that represents everyone.
