Preparing your pets for fireworks

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – With cities in our area canceling Fourth of July fireworks, more people are going out and buying their own.

Like thunderstorms, the unexpected, loud sounds fireworks tend to scare pets, even livestock, and horses.

This is because many animals can hear higher frequencies than humans.

Owners can prepare their pets for scheduled fireworks shows, but if neighbors set them off, it’s a different story.

Which is why it’s important to be courteous.

“If you know that you’re going to set them off and you have a neighbor that has pets, please let them know so they can take precautions,” said Kathy KasaKaitas, Animal Control Supervisor for the Coulee Region Humane Society.

Ways you can prepare your pets for fireworks include bringing them indoors, closing windows & drapes, and playing music to distract them from the sounds outside.
