Police: Eau Claire man set fire to house with 7 people inside

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WKBT) — An Eau Claire man was charged with arson Tuesday after he was accused of setting fire to a home with seven people inside over the weekend, according to authorities.

Hicks ArsonistThomas T. Hicks, 41, faces seven charges each of attempted first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree recklessly endangering safety, in addition to the arson charge. All were charged with a repeat offender enhancer. He appeared in Eau Claire County Court Tuesday.

According to the Eau Claire Police Department, authorities responded to the 700 block of Hobart Street for a structure fire just after midnight last Friday. They found the house on fire, but fortunately, the four adults and three children who were inside when the fire started had been evacuated.

Witnesses told police the fire was started intentionally by Hicks. Officers spotted Hicks’ vehicle leaving the scene and he was arrested during a traffic stop.

He’s being held on a $1 million cash bond.

Hicks was previously convicted of a 2009 arson in Oneida County. He also has previous convictions for theft, battery, forgery, and possession of controlled substance.
