Phil Quillin passes away at 78
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Phil Quillin passed away on Sunday at the age of 78 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Phil is most well-known for his involvement in his family’s grocery business, Quillin’s Foods. He joined the family grocery business his parents started in 1945 and worked there until he retired in 2012. Quillin’s has been a well-known grocery chain in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa with local stores on French Island and in La Crescent.
Phil had a great commitment to education and was honored for his involvement with the Aquinas Foundation of Aquinas Catholic Schools, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and the Boys and Girls Club of La Crosse.
Phil was an active member of Rotary Club for 52 years, serving on the Board and as President. He was the 1983 Oktoberfest Maple Leaf Parade Marshall and he and his wife, Barb, were the first River Fest Commodore and First Mate in 1984.
In 2014, Phil and Barb were also recognized with The Pope John XXIII Award. The award is the highest non-academic award bestowed by Viterbo University.
The family will greet visitors for a celebration of Phil’s life Wednesday from 4 pm to 7 pm and Thursday at 9 AM prior to the memorial mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, 1333 S. 13th Street, La Crosse, WI. A celebration lunch will immediately follow the mass at The Radisson Hotel, Downtown La Crosse. A private family burial will be in the La Crosse Catholic Cemetery the following day.
