SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT)- Parents in the Sparta community are rallying in support of the school board’s decision to implement a mask mandate.

The Sparta School Area School District started enforcing a mask mandate on Sept. 9 following the school board’s 4-2 vote in favor of the policy.

Since then, many parents have been protesting the school board’s decision. Some are gathering signatures on a recall petition for two board members, one of whom resigned. But parents who rallied Thursday night wanted the school board to know they have support.

“We appreciate what you’ve done and we appreciate your decision to protect our children,” said Cherie Davenport, a parent at the rally.

Wednesday, the Sparta district had 14 active COVID-19 cases across all schools. Another 67 students and staff were in quarantine.
