Packers-Bears Thursday injury report: Burnett sits again
Hyde preparing to start against Chicago
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Micah Hyde is preparing to start the Green Bay Packers’ regular-season opener at Chicago Sunday after veteran starting safety Morgan Burnett missed his second straight practice Thursday with a calf injury sustained in training camp.
Hyde, who is the Packers’ extra defensive back in their nickel package and splits his meeting time between the safety and cornerback rooms, said he’s ready if Burnett is a no-go Sunday.
“I’m in the [safety] meetings a lot, so I know what’s going on – the game-planning, when we’re talking about routes, talking about personnel, things like that. Then they send you over to the cornerback room so I get kind of both sides of what’s going on,” Hyde said after practice Thursday. “So I feel comfortable at the end of the day.”
Hyde started the Packers’ Aug. 29 preseason game against Philadelphia in place of Burnett after Burnett’s calf became an issue during practice that week. Burnett has not practiced since and did not suit up for the Sept. 3 preseason finale against New Orleans, either.
Burnett has a history of calf issues and missed the Packers’ Oct. 26 game at New Orleans last season because of a calf injury. It’s unknown whether it’s the same calf or not.
If Burnett can’t go, Hyde would start at safety. He could still play the nickel back position and cover slot receivers if defensive coordinator Dom Capers opts to bring one of his other backup safeties – Sean Richardson or Chris Banjo – in for the nickel and dime packages. Rookie cornerbacks Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins and LaDarius Gunter are the Packers’ other cover options.
“They’re not going to throw anybody in if they don’t know the position, especially with their game plan and what they’re able to do,” Hyde said of playing safety. “I think it’s a big responsibility of mine to go in there and have trust from the coaches to play that position.”
Here’s a look at the full injury report from Thursday:
Did not participate – S Morgan Burnett (calf).
Limited participation – WR Randall Cobb (shoulder), ILB Sam Barrington (ankle).
