One person dead after being pulled from Black River
LA CROSSE (WKBT) — One person is dead after being pulled out of the Black River Saturday.
Officials confirmed that Bassmaster Tournament participants saw someone enter the river in Shopko Bay Saturday afternoon. According to those eyewitnesses, that person began to struggle and go underwater. The fisherman went to help and pulled them out of the water and took them to emergency responders waiting at a dock in Black’s Cove. Life-saving measures were attempted, but unsuccessful, authorities said.
Identifying information about the victim was not given and the incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the La Crosse Police Department at 608-782-7575.
Bassmaster released the following statement in regards to Saturday’s incident:
“While competing on the Mississippi River this weekend, one of our anglers and his marshal witnessed a person go into the water and attempted to offer assistance when the man went underwater while contacting authorities. Since this is an ongoing investigation – and out of respect for all involved – we will not make any other comment at this time. Our hearts and thoughts are with everyone involved.”
