One of La Crosse’s TIF districts could soon be closed

The Finance and Personnel Committee voted to close one of La Crosse’s tax incremental financing, or TIF, districts.

Those areas help fund development, infrastructure and other community projects.

La Crosse’s Mayor says TIF District 9, which includes the city’s international business park, has accomplished all of its goals since it was established about 20 years ago. Ending District 9 opens up opportunities for expansion in other parts of the city.

“Right now, we’re up to the limit of what the state of Wisconsin allows for cities to have within TIF districts. So if we close this one out that then provides us with additional capacity,” said Mayor Tim Kabat.

Kabat says this will also allow the other districts within the city to collect a larger share of local taxes.
