One child dead after falling through ice in Sparta

The Sparta Police Department confirms that the nine-year-old boy who was rescued by dive teams Sunday afternoon died at a hospital in Rochester.

Sparta Police and Fire department were called to Fisherman’s Park at 3:10 p.m. Sunday for a report that two children fell through the ice on Perch Lake.

First responders arrived to see one child safely on shore and a 12-year-old child clinging to the ice in the water.

Officers used ropes to rescue the 12-year-old from the lake and the child was transported to Mayo Clinic in Sparta for treatment.

First responders then learned that a third child went underwater and did not surface.

Using an underwater camera, the Sparta and Fort McCoy fire departments and dive teams found the third child underwater.

The nine-year-old was pulled from the water and transported by GundersenAIR to a hospital in Rochester, Minnesota where he later died.

Two officers were also treated for hypothermia-related injuries and later released.

The Sparta Police Department were assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, Sparta Fire Department, Sparta Ambulance, and the Fort McCoy Fire Department.

The Sparta Police Department wants to remind residents to treat all ice as if it’s unsafe, especially with the warmer temperatures.

The incident is still under investigation.
