Oh, deer: Buck stops here, slamming into Soldier’s Grove One Stop store
SOLDIERS GROVE, Wis. (WKBT) — A frisky, 150-pound deer gave a whole new dimension to the phrase “The buck stops here” when he streaked across the lot of Campbell’s One Stop, lost his footing, slipped and crashed into the door.
“It appeared dazed, got up, looked around and walked away, said Kayla Ronnfeldt, who has worked at the Soldiers Grove gas station, convenience store and deli for 11 years.
Throughout that time, she never had seen a deer on the lot — let alone a 14-point buck almost crashing through the glass front door, said Ronnfeldt, a deer hunter herself whose top trophy is an 8-pointer.
The buck very well might have smashed into the store, except for a rubber mat in front that took his back legs out from under him and caused him to stumble, Ronnfeldt said.
“It’s a good thing that rubber mat is there,” she said.
If the buck had gained entry, it would have smashed right into the register counter where Ronnfeldt works.
She, two other workers and customers were standing in the store “when all of a sudden, we heard the crash,” she said.
“We stopped and looked at each other and said, ‘Did that really happen?’” Ronnfeldt said.
Sometimes, when the weather is pleasant, workers prop open the front door, which also would have given the deer easy entry and probably wreaked havoc in the store.
“I’m really glad it was closed,” she said, adding, “and no customers were going out.”
One Stop’s security camera captured the July 23 incident, which owner Krystal Campbell posted to the store’s Facebook page.
The scenario, also posted below, could provide a perfect visual for Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life,” with a tiny tweak of one word:
“I’ve been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a fawn and a king.
“I’ve been up and down and over and out, and I know one thing —
“Each time I find myself flat on my face,”
“I pick myself up and get back in the race.”
