October 2020 Top Notch Teacher

WESTBY, Wis. (WKBT) – A bond between a teacher and a student can make all the difference.  One local teacher aims to form a relationship with each of his students.

Kent Mikkelson teaches 4th grade at Westby Elementary. But without a loss, he might not have ever become a teacher.

“I had two brothers that suddenly were in a boating accident, and drowned,” said Mikkelson.

It gave Mikkelson a new outlook on life.

“It made me start thinking that life was short, and I needed to really follow my dreams and my passions,” said Mikkelson.

There was one dream he always wanted to accomplish.

“I chose to go back to school and become a teacher,” said Mikkelson.

He’s been teaching at Westby for 23 years, and everyday he aims to accomplish one thing.

“I build my relationships with each individual child, as well as I can,” said Mikkelson. “I want to do that. I want to get to know them, and their parents and their families as much as possible.”

Mikkelson was nominated as top notch teacher because of his impact on his students. He said, it should really be the exact opposite.

“I’m not sure who’s getting the bigger impact. because to me, I think I’m being impacted by the kids as much as I might be impacting them,” said Mikkelson.
