Oct. 16 News 8 Now Highlight Zone: West Salem uses running game, turnovers to beat Tomah

West Salem Football used a steady running game and capitalized on turnovers to win its home opener Friday over Tomah 28-14.

The Panthers built a 14-0 lead in halfway through the second quarter, thanks in part to recording two interceptions off Tomah senior Justin Gerke.

Tomah got on the board late in the second quarter thanks to a trick play. Gerke tossed the ball to an already in-motion Kade Gnewikow, who then threw to a wide open Zander Williams for the touchdown to make it 14-7 at the half.

West Salem then marched down the field to open the third quarter and punched in a rushing touchdown to go up 21-7.

West Salem improves to 1-1 on the year.
