Number of premature births in the U.S. on the rise

The U.S. preterm birth rate is among the worst of high-resource nations.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The number of babies born born prematurely in the U.S. is on the rise, now reaching 9.8 percent of all births.

Premature birth and its complications are the top cause of death of babies and babies who survive premature birth often have long-term health problems.

Doctors with Mayo Clinic Health System say caring for the community will help mothers and their children.

“Good housing that is affordable matters. Clean water matters. La Crosse is very lucky in that regard,” said Dr Dennis Costakos, neonatologist with Mayo Clinic Health System.
