No charges against Minnesota officer in fatal crash

NEW ULM, Minn. (AP) — A New Ulm police officer won’t face charges for a fatal squad car crash last summer.

A Brown County grand jury declined to indict Officer Matthew Rasmussen after hearing evidence this week.

Special prosecutor, Redwood County Attorney Steven Collins, says the grand jury considered a number of felony and misdemeanor counts but issued a “no-bill” on each count.

The Journal reports Collins says the grand jury result does not affect any potential civil lawsuits stemming from the crash.

Eighty-two-year-old Myra Meyer of New Ulm and her 60-year-old son, Brian Wichmann of Mankato, died last July after their Mercury Sable was struck by a squad car driven by Rasmussen. The accident report says Meyer was trying to turn left into a driveway when the car was hit.
