Next-best-thing to Wisconsin State Fair: Drive-thru fair food
WEST ALLIS, Wis. (WKBT) — Don’t fret that cancellation of the Wisconsin State Fair means you have to wait another whole year to satisfy your fascination for fair food fare (some healthy, some just devilishly delish).
Start salivating for the Fair Food Drive-Thru that Bank Five Nine will present during several weekends this month and next, when the fair would have taken place.
The drive-thru an addition to U.S. Cellular’s State Fair Necessities, an adaptation to preserve some of the fair’s ambience while keeping COVID-19 at bay.
It adds to the dimension of the previously announced Cream Puff Drive-Thrus at the State Fair Park and the opening of the online Wisconsin State Fair Official FairWear Store.
“These additions to the State Fair Necessities are another way to sweeten the sting of the Wisconsin State Fair cancellation,” said Kathleen O’Leary, CEO of the Wisconsin State Fair Park. “We are thrilled to offer another slice of the state fair with these fair traditions.”
The drive-thru will allow participants to drive up to State Fair food vendors throughout the Fair Park to buy corn dogs, cheese curds and other foods that are good for the soul (if not always the body) of fair fans.
It will take place Thursdays-Sundays, July 23-26; July 30-Aug. 2; Aug. 6-9, Aug. 13-16. The hours will be 4-8 p.m. Thursdays, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays.
Vendors and menu items will change weekly. To maintain patrons’ safety, all Fair Food Drive-Thru items are intended to be enjoyed at home. Service will be drive-up only, and customers will be asked to stay in their vehicles to maintain physical distancing.
Another option will be Wisconsin Pavilion Boxes, presented by Kwik Trip, which lets the fair go to you, since you can’t go to the fair. Two have more perishable items and will be available for delivery only to Milwaukee, Waukesha and Ozaukee counties between Aug. 6 and 16.
But one box that will be available for delivery nationwide will feature favorites such as coffee blends; three, 2-ounch Hickory Sticks from Usinger’s Famous Sausages made in Milwaukee; a 2-ounce bag of premium, sweetened, dried Grade A Montmorency Tart Cherries from Door County; a caramel candy apple kit to make-at-home complete with 2 Wisconsin grown apples, sticks, caramels and sprinkles; a handmade tube of Good Earth Lip Butter; a 5-ounce bag of Sweet Corn popcorn from Pop’s Kettle Corn; two, 2-ounce Sea Turtle Pecan Fudge bars from Sherwood’s Fabulous Fudge in Racine; two, 6-ounce boxes of macaroni and cheese made with Wisconsin goat milk cheese, and five other foods listed on the State Fair website.
The Online Wisconsin State Fair Official FairWear Store, which is open now, features limited-edition 2020 Official FairWear as well as Official FairWear favorites from the past. Also available will be the winning “2020 Fairtastic Poster Art Contest” poster and postcard.
Fitting in with the times of COVID-19, the store also offers cream puff masks at 12 bucks a pop, or three for $32.
