Seat belt citations fall for fifth consecutive year in Minnesota

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - Citations for failing to buckle up dropped for the fifth year in a row during the annual "Click It or Ticket" campaign in Minnesota.

Authorities reported 4,649 seat belt citations and 141 child seat violations during the two-week campaign, according to the Department of Public Safety. The extra enforcement period started May 20 and ended June 2.

In 2013, state agencies gave out 10,342 seat belt citations. In 2019, nearly the same number of agencies gave out 4,649 rickets for the violations.

In La Crescent, the police department recorded 23 seat belt citations and did not give out any car seat citations. The Winona County Sheriff's Department recorded 10 seat belt violations, while the police department gave out one citation.

DPS says there has been significant progress in people getting home safely since a seat belt law was passed 10 years ago. Prior to the 2008 seat belt law, 152 unbelted motorists lost their lives on Minnesota roads. In 2018, preliminary numbers show 92 people who were not using a seat belt died.

According to Minnesota law, anyone inside the vehicle must be bucked up or seated in correct child safety seats.
