Mayfly hatch noticed on radars in La Crosse a sign of the season

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - The mayfly hatch could be happening soon in our area.

The National Weather Service in La Crosse reported seeing a mayfly hatch on radar Monday evening.

A few smaller hatches happened last week.

A big hatch of insects can be a sign of a healthy river.

The appearance of the bugs on radar can be one of the first way people away from the river know the hatch is happening.

"They can be sort of a problem for travel and stuff like that.  If you're going across a bridge and you get a bunch of mayflies on it, it could produce some slippery roads, just because you're driving over top of mayflies," said NWS La Crosse forecaster Jeff Boyne.

Mayfly hatches typically happen the week before and after the 4th of July, but could happen throughout the summer months if the conditions are right.
