Make Our Parks Clean replaces tobacco litter with awareness

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - Cameron and Poage parks in La Crosse are looking nicer after the Make Our Parks Clean and Safe: Tobacco Pick Up Event on Saturday.

Red flags were left where tobacco litter was picked up to help raise awareness about how many tobacco products are left in our parks.

Organizers said they picked up more than 1,000 pieces of litter at Cameron Park, which helps the environment and keeps litter out of the hands of young children and animals.

"I picked up over 100, I know that. At one small area [near a bench] I picked up 55," said Eva King, a young volunteer with the event.

Because cigarette filters are usually made of plastic, it can take up to ten years for them to decompose.
