Tips to avoid credit card fraud

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - The Monday following Thanksgiving is Cyber Monday, a day when online retailers hold special deals on items.

But bank officials are warning shoppers about what to look for when shopping online and how to keep your bank information safe and secure.

Although popular websites like Amazon are typically safe, credit card scammers can still find a way into your bank account.

"As you get more and more transactions, all the hacking people the fraudsters the scammers the skimmers, it is their chance to hide themselves within more transactions," said Travis Carley, president of Governmental Employees Credit Union in La Crosse.

But he said there are practices to prevent getting hacked.

"We always ask you use a credit card instead of a debit card. Debit cards are tied directly to your checking account here so there is less exposure with a credit card, you have a little bit better charge back rights," he said.

And using familiar websites, can go a long way.

"One time someone stole my dad's credit card and bought like 5,000 dollars worth of shoes in Italy and it was off of a sketchy website so that fear is always in the back of my mind," said Jessica Wilson, an online shopper.

Some websites will often times ask for a little too much information and Carley said a good tip to keep in mind is to recognize the kind of information a website is asking for.

"A good practice is the website shouldn't be asking for more than your name your credit card or debit card number, maybe the expiration date or the code on the back, but it shouldn't really ask you for anything beyond that, maybe shipping address but other than that, no social security numbers no mother's maiden name, stuff like that," he said.

Bank officials also say many banks and institutions offer shoppers the option to set up their debit and credit cards so that if they spend over $100, they will get notified through email.
