LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – After a unanimous vote on Thursday evening, the City of La Crosse will take over animal control duties in 2023.
The city’s existing animal control agreement with the Coulee Region Humane Society will end.
The Common Council approved the purchase of a dedicated animal control vehicle. The city will hire an animal control officer.
If residents need help with an animal in La Crosse, they will now have to call the police department’s non-emergency number.
CRHS will be able to take strays during open hours. But, once the office is closed, people must contact the city’s police department. CRHS will still be the main holding facility
The Humane Society will no longer be able to register animals for residents of La Crosse. People must go to City Hall to register their pets.
As for wildlife, CHRS will still be able to accept sick or injured animals, but the animals must be brought to its facilities. CRHS is no longer allowed to go and get wildlife within the city limits.
La Crosse Police will be responding to all wildlife calls.
Bat-related calls in the city will be handled by the police department and health department, including rabies testing.
This agreement is only for the City of La Crosse. CRHS will continue to serve the City of Onalaska and the rest of La Crosse County with full animal control services.
A spokesperson for the City of La Crosse says this new agreement was made for budget reasons.
