LA CROSSE (WKBT) — There wasn’t a ding dong bell, and the pussy wasn’t in a well, but getting the cat out was quite an adventure — akin to a Shakespearean drama, even.

A post on the La Crosse Police Department’s Facebook page Friday, titled “All in a day’s work,” detailed the rescue of a cat from a sewer near Badger Street and West Avenue.
La Crosse police officers responded to a call from people who were out for a walk and heard meowing from the sewer. They discovered that a kitten was stuck in the sewer.
Officers tried to call the feline out, to no avail. Animal Control officers and employees of the city’s Water and Streets Department arrived to assist in the rescue.
When they rescued the kitty in a net, he leaped from the net and ran across the street. He found a hiding place in the fender of a Chevy Equinox parked in a lot, according to the post.
Alas, the cat then became wedged in the fender, which the rescuers removed to free the animal.
The cat now is in the caring custody of the Coulee Region Humane Society, pending completion of the adoption process. One of the rescuers volunteered to give the grimalkin a good home.
Unable to resist a pun, the Facebook post says, “This can be seen by many as a ‘purrrrfect ending.’”
As for the “Ding Dong Bell” reference, the popular nursery rhyme dates to 16th century England, with a theme against animal cruelty, according to the All Nursery Rhymes website.
Shakespeare used the term in several of his plays, according to the website.
