SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) – Have you ever wondered why it’s so easy to remember the words to a song?A Sparta teacher doesn’t know the answer, but she can tell you a good tune will make her classroom lessons stick.
You won’t hear her on the radio, but Michelle Wilson’s students will tell you her songs are a hit.
“She always makes me smile every day I come to class.” says student Natalie Ledford.
The Sparta Meadowview Middle School teacher turned her virtual classroom into a concert hall.
“It was so cute,” Wilson says. “My students said Mrs. Wilson you should be on ‘American Idol.'”
The only people Mrs. Wilson wants to impress are her fifthgraders, she says, explaining,“It’s just something that’s fun that I think sets me apart from other teachers.”
Wilson uses music to keep her students engaged and to make complicated concepts easier to understand.
“How she’s been teaching us is more fun than usual, ” says student Treyton Sheppard.
Wilson’s melodies will never top the charts, but they have helped her students earn top marks.
“It’s really quite remarkable. All of my students, with their test scores, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year, they improved drastically, ” says Wilson.
That’s better than a Grammy — that’s music tothis teacher’s ears.
Wilson says she really enjoyed teaching virtually — so much so that she is considering taking a virtual teaching position this fall.
