Bipartisan effort pushes FDA to enforce regulations on use of dairy terms

In a letter to the new FDA Commissioner, Dr. Stephen Hahn, senators point to some businesses using dairy terms to market their non-dairy alternative products.

The senators say the incorrect use of these terms suggests imitation products have the same nutrient levels as dairy products.

They are concerned that the misuse of the term is misleading consumers and unfair to hardworking dairy farmers.

Although these violations may seem small, Baldwin says this has a big impact on the dairy industry.

“Using dairy’s good name to describe their products that are not milk, are not yogurt, are not cheese, they’ve really cut into dairy businesses when our dairy industry is struggling like we’ve never seen before,” Baldwin said.

Baldwin says this is a call to action for the new commissioner to enforce the law.

The FDA began discussing how to enforce these regulations under the former FDA commissioner.
