VIROQUA, Wis. (WKBT) -- The 1st annual 'Kickball for the Furbabies' took place on Saturday, May 21 at the Viroqua Park Bowl.
The friendly competition featured two games: Vernon County Sheriff's Department vs. Driftless Humane Society, and Viroqua Fire Department vs. Viroqua Police Department.
The humane society swept the sheriff's department 21-11, and the fire department beat the police department 14-8.
Operating out of a 20-year-old building, Driftless Humane Society is looking to raise $17,000 to cover repairs, new animal therapies, and neonatal kitten kits.
"[The kits] would have everything for an orphan kitten that someone in the community would need," explained Emily Rozeske, executive director of Driftless.
“We’re a small community, we’re all really supportive," she continued, "which is why it’s great to have this out.”
Driftless works closely with law enforcement and emergency responders in the area, as Viroqua is without animal control and steps in when needed.
According to Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson, he does not take days like these for granted.
“We face some stressful situations, and when you can meet when it’s not out on an emergency call, it’s just so nice to interact.”
The Driftless Humane Society is hosting an open house event on Saturday, June 17. Check social media for updates.
