Four people are dead after a plane crash in Monroe, officials say

MONROE, Wis. (WISC) - Green County dispatch has confirmed four people have died in a plane crash near the Monroe Municipal Airport on Sunday.

Authorities say the small aircraft was flying from Kenosha to Monroe and made impact with the ground in an open field just north of the airport.

All four people on the plane died in the crash. The female pilot was flying with her daughter and her two grandchildren.

The Federal Aviation Administration is on scene and an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board is on their way to assess the crash site.

A representative with the Green County Sheriff's Office says the area is closed off and is expected to remain closed for at least for two days. He said the large debris field will require an extensive investigation.

A witness called 911 when they saw the plane descend and catch fire just after noon.

The last plane crash in Monroe happened in 1988, claiming the life of 2 people.
