Fire Department shares warning about chimneys after close call

COON VALLEY, Wis. (WKBT) - If you like to warm up by the fire inside your home, the Coon Valley Fire Department has a warning for you.

On Saturday, firefighters were called to a home in the town of Hamburg shortly before 7 a.m. Responding crews found a small fire in the lower portion of a steel chimney, according to a department post on Facebook.

There was a small gap between an elbow and the vertical portion of the chimney. The fire was contained within the chimney, but authorities say it could have resulted in a working structure fire.

A photo posted by the department shows the buildup of creosote in the chimney. The Fire Department warns anyone who burns wood to have their chimney inspected and cleaned annually at a minimum. The Stoddard-Bergen Fire Department assisted with the incident.
