Crashes follow winter weather in La Cros

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - A blast of winter weather this morning gave area drivers their first taste of winter driving.

The La Crosse Police Department says that between 5 to 10 Friday morning there were 23 calls for crashes.

There were one hundred calls to dispatch in La Crosse County during that same time.

It only takes a little snowfall to create problems.

"Just this little bit amount of precipitation we got this morning went from snow into a pretty ice covered roads, so it really can affect the way that we're driving," said Sgt. Tom Walsh of the La Crosse Police Department.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has some tips for safe winter driving.

Be sure to clear snow and ice from your vehicle's windows, lights, roof and hood.

Allow extra travel time and following distance.
