LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - A local organization is among the first in the state to receive a new Entrepreneurship Support grant.

Couleecap is one of 11 groups in Wisconsin awarded one of the support grants. Wisconsin's Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch gave the $53,000 grant to the nonprofit's executive director Tuesday afternoon.

Couleecap works to reduce poverty and promote economic development in Crawford, La Crosse, Monroe and Vernon counties.

"We really see entrepreneuerism as a two-fold answer: one is helping low-income people become entrepreneurs, but the other is just helping anyone who wants to become an entrepreneur start a business and the idea that they can help spur economic activity and generate new jobs,” said Couleecap Community Development Director Todd Mandel.

Couleecap will use part of their grant to start a nine-week entrepreneurial development course for startups in La Crosse and Viroqua.
