New scholarship aims to send Central students to college for free

Hansen Scholarship will award up to $25,000

A new scholarship fund is hoping to provide a brighter future for hardworking students at Central High School.

The Hansen Scholarship will award up to $25,0000 every year to a graduating senior at Central who shows high levels of achievement but otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford to go to college.

The new scholarship fund is being made possible by a donation from the Mark and Anne Hansen Foundation.

Central interim principal Troy McDonald says the goal is to make the scholarship renewable, meaning the student could go to school at zero cost for four years.

“One of the realities is college is very, very expensive, and for a lot of kids it is very hard to do that, to make the financial commitment to do that,” said McDonald. “This is basically going to allow a kid to chase his or her dreams.”

Applications for the scholarship are available in the Central High School Student Services office and have to be completed by the end of January. The first scholarship will be awarded in April.
