New record for organ transplants at UW Health

COVID-19 deaths rules out organs from being donated

MADISON, Wis. (WKBT) – 548 people got organ transplants during 2020 at UW Health.

That is a record for the Hospital, which includes a record 315 kidney transplants.

The increase follows 173 deceased organ donors, up from the previous record of 150 in 2016.

Several organs can be transplanted from most donors.

The number of potential donors increased because more people died from drug overdoses.

There was also an uptick in heart attacks, strokes and other events that can cause brain death.

The state’s COVID-19 deaths were not a factor in the larger organ donor pool, as a positive test at death rules out donation.
