New radio system coming to La Crosse

Project will help city buses, police department, fire department

La Crosse is increasing public safety with new state-of-the-art technology.

The city is partnering with Motorola to update the city’s radio system

The $5 million radio project will help the city’s bus system as well as the police and fire departments to better communicate within the city. The new radio system will also have the option for city employees to keep their conversations private to outside listeners.

“Basically what it is, is both sides have to have the same key to speak to each other, just keeps it more encrypted It allows the city to be more secure, such things now as a cell phone app can no longer be used to list to the radio conversation,” said La Crosse Director of Information Technology Jacky Greschner.

The encryption system will be implemented next year.
