New CEO takes over at Gundersen Health System
New era begins as Scott Rathgaber takes over as CEO
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — It’s the beginning of a new era for one local hospital.
Monday was the first day in the office for Dr. Scott Rathgaber as the new CEO of Gundersen Health System. He’s replacing Dr. Jeff Thompson, who announced in January he was stepping down.
After spending 17 years at Gundersen as a gastroenterologist, Dr. Rathgaber says his first goal as CEO is to make the transition as smooth as possible and continue the momentum started by Dr. Thompson.
He also wants to further expand Gundersen’s role in the community, which is part of his bigger vision for the system.
“The goal eventually is to really transform us from a health care system into more of a health system for our community, and that’s going to take engaging our staff and our patients and our community partners in order to achieve that,” said Dr. Rathgaber. “It’s really exciting and I’m optimistic after talking to folks.”
Dr. Rathgaber says he still plans to do some clinical work in addition to his responsibilities as CEO as a way to stay connected with patients and staff.
