Neighbors of former La Crosse Kmart propose ideas for land use

People who live near the old Kmart site on La Crosse’s south side got their chance to share their ideas for the space Monday night.

The Bluffside Neighborhood Association met with city planners to tell them what they’d like to see go into the nearly 8 acres of land.

Both the city and neighborhood leaders say it’s a unique opportunity to redevelop a major piece of real estate with many possibilities for the space.

“I can visualize another big park there or something, because I think La Crosse needs green space, but it probably should be more than a park and maybe some residential living, assisted living type facility. I think there’s a shortage of housing across La Crosse in general,” said Bluffside Neighborhood Assoc. co-chair Jim Bagniewski.

City officials say Kmart still has a lease on the site until November and the land is privately owned.

They hope any future developments take the feedback gathered Monday night into consideration.
