NCAA Division III cancels winter national championships
NCAA Division III has canceled its 2021 winter championships due to low participation numbers, per an official statement.
The D-III Championships Committee based the decision on a “winter declaration form” that member schools used to detail their intent to play this season. Per the official statement, the response from member schools showed all winter sports didn’t have enough teams playing the minimum number of games needed to be eligible for a national tournament.
Those thresholds, per the NCAA, were 60 percent for basketball, swimming and diving, and indoor track and field, and 70 percent for hockey and wrestling. Per NCAA data, most sports had only half their member schools intending to play the number of games needed for national tournament eligibility.
